How to Set Up Mackie Control Universal (MCU) on Windows for Shortcuts, Macros, and Volume

MIDI Command Studio supports the Mackie Control Universal (MCU) protocol and lets you map faders, knobs, and encoders to shortcuts, macros, and volume control for Windows apps. In MCU mode, supported devices can also receive LCD text, LED state, and motorized fader feedback.

This guide covers generic Mackie/MCU-compatible controllers. For device-specific steps, use your hardware manual for entering MCU mode.

Before You Start

  • Put the controller into Mackie/MCU mode (not HUI).

Setup Steps

  1. Open MIDI Command Studio and add your controller from the Devices panel.
  2. When prompted, set feedback options for that device (LED/LCD/fader as needed).
  3. Set Protocol mode to MCU.
  4. Set MCU layout to match your hardware: Single fader for one-fader controllers, or Multi fader for 8/9-fader controllers.
  5. If you skip setup or want to change it later, use Settings → Device Feedback for that device.

How to Verify

  • Device status should show green in the Devices panel.
  • Preset switches should update LCD text on supported displays.
  • Faders should update to the current mapped volume on save, preset load or app startup.
  • LED-enabled mappings should reflect their configured LED mode.
